STORY OF ROMULUS&REMUS
When was Rome founded
Rome was founded by Romulus and Remus in 753 BC. Romulus and Remus were the twin sons of the god Mars and the vestal virgin, Rhea Silvia. The twins had a challenging start in life when they were essentially condemned to death as infants and by the mercy of the servant ordered to carry out their sentence they were spared. They were sent down the River Tiber in a basket where they were nursed by a she-wolf until being cared for by a shepherd and his wife. Remus later was captured by the same king that earlier had condemned him to death. King Amulius, their maternal grandfather, did not recognize him since he assumed the twins had been killed. Romulus freed Remus and killed the King. The twins rejected the crown as King of Alba Longa. They set out to found a new city. This was not something they could agree upon, as Remus wanted to build on the Aventine Hill, Romulus wanted to start on the Palatine Hill. They consulted augury, the prophesy of birds, to settle their disagreement. They still disagreed on the bird signs, both believing himself the winner. At this point Romulus started building walls and trenches on the Palatine Hill while Remus mocked his efforts. Romulus grew tired of his mockery and when Remus jumped over his brother's new city wall jokingly, Romulus killed Remus. Romulus named his new city after himself, Roma. Rome began as a iron age hut village in the mid 8th century.
